{"id":2564,"date":"2022-12-06T17:47:39","date_gmt":"2022-12-06T06:47:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/yspaceonline.ymcansw.org.au\/central-coast\/?p=2564"},"modified":"2022-12-06T17:47:39","modified_gmt":"2022-12-06T06:47:39","slug":"jack-watson-reward-of-persistence-and-resilience","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/yspaceonline.ymcansw.org.au\/central-coast\/2022\/12\/06\/jack-watson-reward-of-persistence-and-resilience\/","title":{"rendered":"Jack Watson &#8211; Reward of Persistence and Resilience"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"margin: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; color: black;\">I have been a rugby league referee since 2020 and this will be the story of the first uninterrupted (COVID) year I have been a part of. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; color: black;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; color: black;\">At the start of the 2022 season, I was getting under 12 games, which is 2 years below what my best games could be and at the time this was quite disheartening for me because I felt like I could do better. Towards the end of last season, I had completed an online course so I could start moving through the ranks and I just had to finish the on-field component, which I wouldn&#8217;t get a chance to do until round 3. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; color: black;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; color: black;\">I refereed my first under 13s game in round 3 while being assessed by one of the older boys. I had a great game, and he told the appointments manager that I am capable of doing better games than 13 3s. The only problem was that I also played, so all the games that I could do were on at about the same time I played, so it was hard. I still had my goal of reffing the 14 1s grand final this year even though I had never reffed 14s at this point. I did eventually get to have a go at reffing 14 2s and I did really well, so whenever I was able to, I was now reffing 14 2s. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; color: black;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; color: black;\">However, throughout the year I had partially torn my quad which meant I wasn&#8217;t able to run as fast or move as well as I had been, which was affecting my performances, but I persisted. I kept on trying my best throughout the remainder of the regular season. The last round I had an opportunity to show the appointments manager how I could referee in a 14 2s game and I smashed that game. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; color: black;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; color: black;\">The next week was the start of the final\u2019s series, and I got my first ever 14 1s game in a major semi-final. The game was a lot quicker than 14 2s which blew me away at first and my quad struggled to keep up, but I kept on pushing and I adjusted my game to suit the way my body was feeling, and it worked. I had won the shoot-out with the other referee for the only 14 1s game the next week. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; color: black;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; color: black;\">I had the preliminary final now all I had to do was not screw up and the 14 1s grand final was mine. Well, seniors\u2019 finals were on the same day as my preliminary final, so I had an hour to get from Erina to Tuggerah for the game. I got to Tuggerah with 3 minutes before kick-off and I thought that I may have cost myself the grand final for the next week just by being late. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; color: black;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; color: black;\">However, I again went out and I refereed the best I could, and I won myself the spot for the 14 1s grand final at Central Coast stadium. The hard work had paid off. Now I thought that it couldn&#8217;t get any better than having refereed the 14 1s grand final, but I was wrong! I had also been asked to referee the under 13s NSW all schools grand final and touch judge the 15a NSW all schools final. This was huge because it was my first ever NSW appointment. To wrap my year up I also got appointed to the under 19s senior touch line for my first ever senior finals series. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; color: black;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; color: black;\">This year was a huge year for me, and it was recognised at the annual dinner which is our awards night. I was chosen as the most improved junior referee and was also a finalist for junior referee of the year. I was later nominated for young official of the year at the Central Coast sports awards.
