Volunteering is all about helping others<\/strong>, but the difference that it can have on yourself is often overlooked.<\/strong><\/p>\n

24-year old Crystal Russom enjoys volunteering for all sorts of causes \u2013 not only to make a difference in her community, but as an act of self-care.
\nCrystal is a born and bred Coastie, and much of her inspiration stems from growing up in a tight-knit community on Mangrove Mountain. However, it was her grandparents\u2019 influence that really ignited a spark for getting involved in volunteering and community organisations.
\n\u201cMy whole family has always really valued giving back and contributing to society, and my Nana and Grandpa were both pretty active in the community, in the arts sector and in Rotary as well. As a kid, I did Girl Guides and volunteered for extracurricular activities through school, however it wasn\u2019t until later in high school that I really got into volunteering and understood how it could actually help me as a form of self-care.\u201d
\nIn early high school, Crystal was diagnosed with severe depression and anxiety after the sudden death of both her grandparents. She recalls the difficulties of dealing with everyday occurrences and navigating young adult life.
\n\u201cDuring high school, I battled a self-harm addiction and very bad social anxiety. I remember I couldn\u2019t go through the drive-thru without my chest tightening. In the middle of class, I\u2019d burst into tears over nothing. I tried to go shopping or out to parties with my friends but at almost all of them, something would trigger an anxiety attack. I was terrified of phone calls and talking to strangers, and that particularly proved problematic when I got my first job in retail, and I had to serve customers and answer phones.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Overcoming mental health through helping others<\/strong><\/p>\n

As well as seeking professional help, Crystal also began volunteering to combat her social anxiety, through activities like doorknocking, selling raffle tickets and cold-calling.
\n\u201cI signed up for doorknocks like The Salvo\u2019s Red Shield Appeal and phone campaigns with charities like The Heart Foundation. I\u2019d sometimes take a friend with me so it\u2019s safer but also because it\u2019s less daunting with a support person there. With every rejection you got, your resilience built up and you learn how to interact with people more effectively. You get to talk with all sorts of people, plus if you\u2019re walking its good exercise and you\u2019re raising money for a worthy cause.\u201d
\nSince then, Crystal has gone on to give her time to many causes \u2013 from volunteering at CoastFM 96.3 Community Radio to delivering donations to farmers during the height of the drought.
\n\u201cIn 2018, I was working in radio and was approached by a listener named Sara, who wanted to collect donations of groceries and stockfeed for farmers in Western NSW who were struggling through the drought. I come from a farming family myself and the cause was very important to me, so together with Sara and help from Gosford North Rotary Club, we organised and ran the Central Coast For Our Farmers Donation Drive the following month.\u201d
\nCrystal says the project was probably one of the hardest things she\u2019s ever taken on, however it made her realize what she could achieve when she put her mind to it.
\n\u201cI\u2019d never organised something of this scale before, in such a short time, and I still can\u2019t believe we somehow managed to fill an entire semi-trailer full of food, water and animal feed \u2013 then deliver it all to farmers 10 hours away!\u201d<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Opening the doors to new experiences<\/strong><\/p>\n

Volunteering has not only led Crystal to regain confidence in herself and helped her with dealing with anxiety, she says it\u2019s also a great way to try new experiences and as a something to do with friends.
\n\u201cI\u2019ve volunteered at Mardi Gras Parades, spoken at events, fundraised at sports events and fun runs, held trivia nights, movie nights and raffles, and brought my friends and family along to local clean-ups. Recently, I even travelled out to Walgett in regional NSW with Rural Aid to volunteer on a farm, which was so rewarding!\u201d
\nCrystal says while she urges young people to seek professional mental health help, she encourages them to think differently about finding purpose through volunteering, and how young people can give back to their communities.
\n\u201cI think sometimes people think volunteering is just collecting money or picking up rubbish, or that it takes up heaps of time, but there\u2019s so much more to it. You can apply almost any skill to a volunteer role\u2026 some of the volunteering I\u2019ve done has been around managing social media content because it\u2019s something I know how to do and can easily do it at home after work, but it\u2019s also a role commonly often overlooked in grassroots organisations. I\u2019ve contributed to lots of community events and organisations in all sorts of roles – administrational tasks, photography, physical labour, event management, marketing efforts\u2026 and often I\u2019ve enjoyed it so much it doesn\u2019t feel like volunteer work, it\u2019s just something fun to do!\u201d
\n\u201cA volunteer role is a great coping mechanism because you\u2019re choosing a role or an organisation that you connect with, that you\u2019re passionate about. Volunteering opens so many opportunities to new experiences, people and places\u2026 it gives you a reason to get out of bed, it gives you a purpose.\u201d
\nCrystal\u2019s volunteering efforts have earned her a handful of nominations and awards, including Central Coast Council\u2019s Youth of the Year 2018, Volunteering Central Coast\u2019s Young Volunteer of the Year 2019 and a finalist position in the 7NEWS Young Achiever Awards 2020.
