The Fall That Changed Everything<\/strong><\/p>\n

For many Mother’s Day is a day of happiness, for me it’s a reminder of\u00a0 that one fall that ruined my soccer season, that one fall that changed everything…<\/p>\n

It was a normal soccer game, well for others, for me it was a nightmare come to life. I had my first serious soccer injury, it was heartbreaking. Let me tell you what happened.<\/p>\n

I was running towards the ball and then the bottom half of my left leg shifted backwards and I fell onto the ground. The worst feeling ever. It sucked, let me tell you that! Better yet, a girl from the opposite team fell on top of me , like seriously, way to add more pain!<\/p>\n

The moment I hit the ground I just burst into tears. Normally I would get straight back up if I get hurt, but this hurt really bad. I can’t describe the pain but it was bad, the worst pain I have ever experienced, I couldn’t even move. Soon enough my dad came to my rescue. He slowly lifted me up and carried me off the field, to the side line. \u00a0I was sitting on the side line for about 30 minutes waiting for the ambulance. When the ambulance came the paramedic was one of the dads from the under 12\u2019s team. He gave me pain medication and crutches. He asked me if I heard any cracks, I said no. My mum had to take me to the hospital, what a great Mother’s Day present am I right? I felt bad but we had no choice. I said goodbye to everyone and headed off to the hospital.<\/p>\n

When we arrived at the hospital I was in shock. I didn’t know what to think other than wanting the pain to go away. I couldn’t cry, I was in so much pain, I just sat there and stared at the floor. I was at the hospital for hours, but it felt like days.\u00a0 After all the x-rays were complete I was called into the doctor’s office and consulted on what my situation was. The way I described the pain and where the pain was he said it could be my ACL or MCL. There were discussions about surgery and that really scared me. I then had to get another x-ray for my ankle because that really hurt as well. Turns out I sprained it.<\/p>\n

After my ankle x-ray the doctor put some bandages on my knee and ankle and explained what was next,\u00a0 I needed to have another MRI scan. The reason I said another MRI scan is because the Friday before this happened I had an MRI scan for my left knee because it has been hurting for months. When we got home from the hospital I climbed into bed and cried. I tried not to cry but I just couldn’t stop, I was in so much pain both mentally and physically. I went from training everyday to laying in bed everyday in pain. I was so upset that I couldn’t play the sport I love. I was truly heart-broken.<\/p>\n

When I went for my next MRI scan I knew exactly what to expect. The good thing this time was I got to pick the music I listen to and I chose Billie Eilish. 15 minutes after laying down, I finally crutched my way out of the room and into the waiting room to sit with my mum. 5 minutes later the lady came up to me and looks me in my eyes and says \u201c You need to go to emergency, you\u2019ve done some serious damage<\/em><\/strong>.\u201d My heart sank. Even though my heart sank, I just laughed. I’m not sure why I laughed but I did. All I could think about was, what is my dad going to think, it was his birthday, it would be the worst birthday present ever (sorry for that Dad).<\/p>\n

After waiting at the hospital for 5 painful HOURS, it turns out that I tore my MCL (2nd grade tear thank God, but still bad) and fractured the top of my Tibia bone. They gave me a knee brace that could only bend to a certain degree. I was stuck in that knee brace for 6 weeks, it sucked!<\/p>\n

A few weeks later I went to a specialist to see if I needed surgery. He told me that I also have Patella Tendinitis in both my knees and luckily I didn’t need surgery.<\/p>\n

After a few days of more rest I finally got to go watch my team play. I was so excited and jealous at the same time. The whole time I watched them I wanted to jump out of my seat and play. It killed me inside that I couldn’t play. Ever since I injured myself my team was winning every game and that got me thinking, they don’t need me. They were doing so well without me, they don’t need my help right? Then my brother said to me what I’ve been thinking all this time. He turns to me and say’s \u201cAmelia, they keep winning, they don’t need you anymore.\u201d And that really broke my heart. Hearing those words come out of someone else’s mouth really made my overthinking true.<\/p>\n

For a while I believed those words. My dad heard what my brother said and started defending me. I felt reassured. But then again, a part of me still felt that self-doubt, I felt so useless, felt pathetic. I got so depressed because of this stupid injury. I worked so hard climbing out of my depression hole and now I’ve fallen all the way back down. I thought I would have taken this injury better mentally wise but obviously not. I wish I could go back in time and redo the whole thing.<\/p>\n

When I had my second appointment with my specialist I didn’t bother bringing my crutches with me as I was starting to walk again. When my dad and I got into the office we sat down and the specialist looked at my leg. The Doctor explained that my fracture was all healed, but I wouldn’t be fully fit for about 4-6 months. That made me so frustrated. No sport for 4-6 months, no thank you!<\/p>\n

I left the building mad but happy at the same time. My fracture had healed but, no sport yet. I’ve been playing soccer since I was 9 years old. I wasn’t going to let someone tell me I can’t play the game I love. I was determined to come back to soccer in the next few weeks.<\/p>\n

In the holidays I did so much Rehab work, and after a few days I could finally get my leg straight.\u00a0 Going to physio, doing the work outs and putting the effort in, I finally got my leg straight. I felt so proud of myself, and I still am.<\/p>\n

This injury has made me love and appreciate life more. Before this injury I was actually thinking of quitting soccer because of my previous knee pain but this injury has made me change my mind.<\/p>\n

Being on that side line made me love the game even more.<\/strong> And also before my injury I used to hate how big my thighs were. But now I love them. They shrunk during my injury and I hated how skinny they were. Believe it or not this injury has helped me in a lot of ways. It’s crazy to think I had to break myself before I could put myself back together both mentally and physically. I guess everything happens for a reason..<\/p>\n
